Artist Thornton Dial Sr. once said, "Art ain't about paint, it ain't about canvas. It's about ideas..." I share the very same view. Throughout my art career, I have experimented and used varied methodologies, medias and materials to express my thoughts, feelings, understanding, interpretation of the world. My artwork, as a whole, reflects the creative expressions in various times and stages along my art path.
My love for painting springs from my lifelong fascination with my native cultures and traditional Chinese arts such as calligraphy, Chinese stamp carving, and poetry. I love folk arts such as embroidery, masks, paper-cuts, textiles and woodcarving. The powerful, beautiful and rich symbols and metaphors used in folk arts intrigue me. My artwork integrates these cultural elements to unveil the inspiring human spirit and wisdom of ordinary people, and to express my love and concern for life and nature.
My art is my language, through which I share the joy of creation and communicate my deep thoughts and views of the world. My artworks reveal the philosophy on art through the concept of yin-yang; which represents and illustrates how seemingly opposing, primal cosmic forces are bound together and maintain a dynamic equilibrium in the universe (for example, male and female, warm and cold, dark and bright.) This philosophy also underlies my meditation upon many ever-changing phenomena in this dynamic world.
